The Lane Check

See the complaint record on the listing itself

The Lane Check extension for Chrome puts a small card on used-car listings. It shows how often owners of that model year told NHTSA about engine, transmission and fuel-system problems, and how that compares with the other model years we track.

A Craigslist listing for a 2013 Ford Focus with The Lane Check card in the corner: very high complaint signal, 68 percent of owner complaints.

How it works

  1. Add it to Chrome. It is free and needs no account.
  2. Open a used-car listing on Cars.com, Autotrader, CarGurus or Craigslist.
  3. The card appears in the corner for any 2010 to 2023 model year we track. One click opens the page for that model year, with its recalls and the years either side.

What it does not do

It does not send us the listings you look at. The listing is matched on your computer against a public file of model-year scores, downloaded at most once a day. A VIN reaches this site only if you click “Check this VIN”. The details are in the privacy policy.

The card describes the model year, from public NHTSA owner complaints. It is not a history report or an inspection of the individual car.

Not on Chrome? The same answer is on this site for every model year.
